Short Bio

Emiliano Sisinni was born in 1975. He obtained the M.Sc. in electronic engineering in 2000 at the University of Brescia. In 2004, he got the Ph.D. in “Electronic Instrumentation” at the same University. Currently he is a Full professor in Electronics with the Department of Information Engineering of the Brescia University. He has been visiting professor at the MidSweden University since AY 2016/2017. Since 2004 he has been involved in teaching activities. He teaches the course of “Digital Systems for Signal Processing” within the Communications technologies and multimedia Laurea degree (M.Sc., in english) and the course of “Electronic System Design” within the Electronic Engineerig Laurea degree (M.Sc). Since 2000 he has been supervisor of more than 70 theses and stages. He is a member of the doctoral committee in Information Engineering at the University of Brescia (since XXXIII cycle). His main research topic is the development and the performance evaluation of digital networks for industrial communications. In particular, as regards “wireless fieldbus”, he has worked on the development of protocol stacks and node hardware with the aim of maximizing determinism, energy efficiency and measurement accuracy. He has also been involved in the development of digital signal processing of data retrieved from sensors based on microcontrollers, DSPs and FPGAs. Some specific topics are the study and development of new techniques to manage signals of position sensors (LVDT, encoders), and the development of innovative numeric instrumentations based on Barkhausen effect for the analysis of residual stress in ferromagnetic materials. Recently, he investigated use of IoT technologies for industrial applications, with particular attention to emerging LPWAN solutions. He is the author of more than 100 international papers (scientific journals and conference proceedings). The research activity on synchronization of PROFINET networks has been awarded as "Best Work In Progress" during ETFA2008 (IEEE conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation). The research activity related to the dissemination of a time reference in wireless networks has been awarded as Best Paper at the ISPCS2010 conference. The work "Evaluation of communication latency in IIoT applications" was awarded as "Best Paper" at the M & N2017 conference. The research activity on the industrial use of LPWAN/LoRaWAN technology “Enhanced flexible LoRaWAN node for industrial IoT” has been awarded with the Best WiP paper award at the 14th IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems 2018. He was host committee co-chair of International IEEE Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control and Communications (ISPCS) in 2009 (October 14-16, 2009). He was Chair of the Summer School organized for the annual meeting of the GE2016 Electronics Group (June 20-22, 2016). He was a tutorial lecturer at the IEEE International Symposium on Sensor Applications in 2012 with the lecture "Wireless Sensor Networks for Industrial Applications". He was the organizer of the Special Session entitled "Wireless Sensor Networking in the Iot era" at the 2017 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (September 10, 2016). He has been one of the guest editor of the special section "From Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks to Industrial Internet of Things" for IEEE Transaction on Industrial Informatics. Since 2008 he has been an expert member of the Technical Committee 65 (Control and Measurement in Industrial Processes) and the subcommittee 65C (Digital Communications for Control Systems) of the CEI (Italian Electrotechnical Committee). He is involved in the corresponding activities of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) as one of the Italian expert members of the Working Group responsible for drafting standards on wireless communications and their coexistence in the industrial field. He is a member of the TCFA Subcommittee on Green Communication for Automation of the company "IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, since 2014. He is reviewer for several international journals, including: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurements, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Mechatronics, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Communications Letters, Elsevier Sensors & Actuators: A. Physical, Elsevier Integration, the VLSI Journal, the Journal Of Circuits, Systems And Computers, the Microelectronics Reliability, the Elsevier journal Computer Communications. He is also member of the TPC of several international conferences, including IEEE SAS conference, IEEE I2MTC conference, IEEE ISPCS conference, IEEE WFCS conference.
